Do I have it in me?

Well, I've been toying with the idea to actually challenge myself to a fitness goal. Fredericksburg will be hosting the second annual Marine Corps Historic Half on May 17, 2009. Last year was a huge success and I'm thinking, toying, poking at the idea of trying to participate. I don't know. 13 miles does seem far. I'm not really a "runner" so this might just be a crazy pie-in-the-sky notion. Any thoughts from my runner friends out there?

OR, I could go the easier route and invite a bunch of friends down for the Semper Fred Fun Run on the same day. This is a family-friendly 2-mile run/walk and would certainly be a lot of fun and would still be some good exercise.

Any thoughts on which route I should take? Anyone willing to join me?!

I think you should to the fun run, and I could possibly be persuaded to come down and participate. We can train together "virtually."

I have been toying with the idea of a triathalon (run, swim, bike) because it sounds really fun. Or a duathalon sans swimming, depending on where the swimming takes place.

Haha - running! I can cheer from the sidelines with the best of them!

Are you playing hookie today after our wild and crazy night out last night??

The up side of doing the fun run is that you get the exercise and exposure to cute Marines without being all hot and sweaty and tired (well, not AS hot, sweaty, and tired as you could be!).

Go for the 13-miler! I'd do it with you but I, er, already have plans that day. No, seriously, I think it's a great idea and probably doable - having a definite goal really motivates you. Check out the website for "Couch to 5K" (not sure what the actual URL is) - I know a lot of people that have used it to get started on a running goal.

I think the 13 miler would be doable for you, since you have so much time to train from now until May. I second the recommendation of the Couch-to-5k program to get started. I'm not a runner at all, or I'd run with you. Although I have toyed with the idea of doing a sprint triathalon. And I'm totally with you on maximizing exposure to hot Marines!!! :-)

Do the fun run!

Those crazy long ass runs will break down your organs.

Darling, you have NEVER liked running. I'm all for an exercise goal but it should be for something you really like - like ballet. I used to tell myself I'd do a marathon before i was 30 but then I realized how LONG they take to train for. :) And your toenails fall off.

Einat- What?!?!?!

To answer your original question - YES, you have it in you!! :-)

I have been checking out that Couch to 5K site that A mentioned. I think Rob and I are signing up for one that takes place in October. If it goes well, maybe that will give me the confidence for the half.

I'll definitely check out that website. Well, in the very least I'm doing the fun run. You guys are scaring me with the organ failure and toenails falling off! Guess I need to look for another (shorter) kind of run around here to challenge myself - watching the marathon last night on at the Olympics kinda scared me!

I've known plenty of people that have run the Boston and NY marathons, and apparently your toenails only fall off if you have ill-fitting sneakers. Just make sure your kicks fit right. I don't know about the organ failure thing.

I know several marathoners whose toenails are intact. I have never heard of running (or any strenuous exercise) breaking down internal organs. (!?!?!)

Perhaps a bit of hyperbole on my part, but here's a post that talks about how extreme exercise can make your liver run out of glycogen and start digesting protien to survive. I also saw a show where a woman was on an extreme exercise challenge and had "bonked" to the extent that she got kidney failure and had to be airlifted out.

Regardless, if running isn't your passion, I think you are still a hero for completing a 5K!
