growing: the start of strawberry season

It's almost here - the start of strawberries. The plants in the garden are heavy with blooms and I'm hoping that means this season of strawberries will be a humdinger. Fingers crossed.

I'm currently am in the middle of reading Alicia Silverstone's The Kind Diet. I'd like to try to transition away from milk products and bought both rice milk and almond milk last night at Wegman's to do my own personal experiment. Which tastes better straight up; which with cereal; which in recipes? It'll be interesting to see what I can do to make my diet a little less dairy-heavy. I've tried soy milk in the past and it just doesn't *ahem* agree with me. Plus, too much soy isn't a good thing (and soy seems to be everywhere these days). So stay tuned. Well, if you care...

A day of work and then dinner with some girlfriends tonight. It promises to rain a little today which may be a good thing - wash all the pollen off my car please!

My strawberries are coming in hot and heavy too--I think it must be all the rain we got. My plants have taken over my entire herb bed and already have big green berries. Time to go get some netting, methinks!

Are you able to get any local pastured dairy products locally? Would that ease your concerns about dairy? I just found a fantastic source of non-homogenized milk, fresh yogurt, cheese, butter, and eggs (but eggs are pretty easy) but I don't think the bus goes up to Fred.

Try coconut milk too - Penny drinks it. They have sweetened and unsweeetened. We prefer it for pancakes and other items that call for milk. She never liked rice milk or almond milk.

Definitely curious to see what you find. I don't think I'm heading onto the dairy free bandwagon any time soon (must have cheese, and I'm not aware of any good cheese substitutes), but it might be nice to introduce some other sources of nutrition into my diet.

Oh, I couldn't do without my milk and yogurt! But go you, I think it is a great move - good luck! Re: strawberries, I heard on NPR that this is going to be a great season for strawberries, to the point that farmers in FL are destroying parts of their crops as a price control mechanism. Prices will likely be half of what they were last year because of oversupply - which is good for me! Of course, I have to wait til June for local strawberries around these parts.

We had our first garden strawberry yesterday. I took a nibble, J. took a nibble and Max ran off with the rest, shoving stem and all in his mouth. Our first family strawberry. :)

I'm not sure that we're getting a bumper crop, and the rest of the strawberries have a ways to go ... but, man, was it delicious.

I'll be interested to see what you think of almond milk. Let us know.

I've been eyeing "The Kind Diet", maybe I'll pick it up.
