holiday weekend

Holiday weekends with very little to do are the best. Instead of heading out of town, battling traffic, I'm in Fredericksburg enjoying a quiet 4th of July weekend. Had a trip to Potomac Point Winery for a little sipping with some girlfriends yesterday. Today a barbecue at M.'s house and I've been debating what to make...

With some beautiful tomatoes just sitting around, I've decided to try a classic bread and tomato salad. Specifically, the Crouton Salad from Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything Vegetarian. It'll be a simple way to highlight some really great, fresh, sweet tomatoes. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm baking the French bread right now in the bread machine, so have a few more hours until I can get started.

I'm growing lemon basil, sweet basil, dill, parsley, sage, and rosemary (no thyme!) in the herb garden this year. Do you think I can make lemon basil pesto? Hmm... that might be another holiday weekend project.

I bet lemon basil pesto will be lovely on fresh pasta! I'm going to try making pesto (and homemade pasta) tomorrow!

Homemade pasta! You go! I'm excited to hear how it goes :) Maybe I'll try the lemon basil pesto and I'll let you know if it's a winner. I agree that it would probably be good on fresh pasta. Yum.
