I am in awe of Mother Nature and all she can do. A strong earthquake earlier this week and on Thursday night a massive storm that swept through Fredericksburg with a vengance, taking down two limbs off the big shade tree in front of my house. With branches and chunks scattered across the yard, I could see a series of woodpecker holes throughout the debris. Little did I know that big shade tree was home not only to squirrels and songbirds, but also insect-snacking woodpeckers.
Well, I'm afraid the tree's end is near. I came home yesterday to a big white X painted across the trunk by the city. I will miss that big tree. Watching the squirrels play in its branches. The shade it gives to the front garden and stoop. Always having a bit of green towering over me, almost protective of the little house.
I don't know when she'll be taken away. We have Hurricane Irene coming sometime today and I'm hoping that the big shade tree holds her own. I'll be hunkering down the best I can. Up early this morning to do a little cooking just in case we lose power (likely). On the menu for the storm: black bean and tomato quinoa with lemon dressing (well, I'll be using lime). And this afternoon just might have to start on all that SoCo slushy in the freezer. I mean, can't let it go to waste...

If you're breaking out the SoCo Slushy I'm coming over!
I hope you guys made it through okay--so sad about your tree, it was so lovely!
"under the constant, beaming, almost vertical sun of Virginia, shade is our Elysium." (TJ to Wm. Hamilton, July 1806) -- Sorry you lost your tree and its shade.
L and JBR - thank you for your words of condolence. She's still with me and I'm enjoying her while I can. Love the quote, by the way, JBR.
